Fractional vs full-time vs interim executive: cost, hours, fit
A fractional executive works for your company part-time on a monthly retainer, usually 8 to 30 hours a month, and keeps other clients. A full-time executive is an employee with a salary, benefits and equity expectations. An interim executive is full-time but temporary, filling a gap for months while you hire. The right one depends on how many hours of senior judgment you need each week and for how long.
The comparison
| Measure | Fractional | Full-time | Interim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost, 2026 US benchmarks | $2,500 to $15,000 a month per seat; $30,000 to $180,000 a year | $250,000 to $600,000 a year fully loaded for a GC, CIO or CISO, plus 20 to 30 percent of first-year salary in recruiting fees | $15,000 to $35,000 a month |
| Hours | 8 to 30 a month | 160+ a month | 160+ a month |
| Commitment | Month to month after an initial period | Indefinite; severance on exit | Three to twelve months |
| Best for | Companies with 10 to 150 people that need senior judgment weekly, not daily | Companies large enough to keep an executive busy five days a week | A sudden vacancy, a transaction, a turnaround |
| Worst for | Roles that are execution-heavy every day (running a sales team) | Companies that cannot fill the week, which is most under 150 people | Anything meant to last |
| How it ends | 30 days' notice, or converts to a hire we help you make | Resignation or termination | The permanent hire starts |

When fractional is the wrong answer
- You need 40 hours a week of the function. A fractional executive at 30 hours a month is one week of a full-time person's time; if the work is daily, hire.
- Your investors or your board require a full-time named executive in the seat. Some financings do; ask before you sign the term sheet.
- The role is execution-heavy: building and running a sales team, managing a 15-person engineering group, running a plant. Fractional executives decide and direct; they do not staff a department with their own hours.
- You want someone whose only client is you. Fractional executives keep several clients; that is how the price works.
When a team beats a single fractional hire
A single fractional CFO, CIO or general counsel solves one function. Most of the decisions an owner is stuck on cross functions: a contract with a data clause, a franchise agreement with a technology schedule, a sale with a security questionnaire in the data room. When you hire three fractional executives from three firms, you become the project manager among them. When the three already work together, the coordination is theirs. That is the case for a standing team, and it is the only thing we sell that a marketplace cannot.
Fractional vs consultant vs your MSP's vCIO
A consultant delivers a report and leaves; a fractional executive owns the function month after month and is accountable for it. An MSP's "vCIO" is a quarterly review built around the MSP's own products; an independent fractional CIO writes the requirements, runs the vendor selection and reads the invoices, including the MSP's.
Questions owners ask
How much does a fractional executive cost?
In 2026, single seats run about $2,500 to $15,000 a month in the US depending on hours and seniority. Our ranges are published on the pricing page.
Can a fractional engagement turn into a full-time hire?
Yes, and it often should when a company grows into the seat. We help write the role, screen the candidates and hand off.
Is interim the same as fractional?
No. Interim is full-time and temporary; fractional is part-time and ongoing. The price difference is about two to three times.
How many hours a month do I need?
Most companies our size need 8 to 16 hours a month per seat in steady state and more in the first 90 days. The call is where we size it.
